I thought some of you who are curious about wikis might want to attend this online event tonight:
A message to all members of Classroom 2.0
When: Wed, June 10 Time: 5pm Pacific (US) / 8pm Eastern (US) / 12am GMT (next day) Duration: 1 Hour Where: http://tinyurl.com/cr20live
Sue Waters, Edublogs Community Facilitator (http://theedublogger.edublogs.org/), is facilitating a fortnightly beginners series for educators new to technology. The third of a three-part series, "Go Wild with Wikis", will broadcast on Wednesday June 10, 2009 at 8:00 PM (EDT), hosted on Elluminate and facilitated by Sue Waters, Edublogs Community Facilitator. In the first session Sue took participants on a guided tour of what are wikis, why educators use wikis, and how to use wikis for their own professional learning and/or with their students. In Part II participants took a guided tour of how wikis are being used for collaboration and discussed the challenges of teaching students how to collaborate plus looking at ways of making it work better.
In this third session of "Go Wild with Wikis" participants will work together in a team on a wikispaces wiki to learn more about using a wiki. Please sign up for a wikispaces account prior to the session (http://www.wikispaces.com/). If you want to watch the previous session you will find detailed posts and the show archives here - http://liveevents.edublogs.org/tag/wiki/

I know I am not attending this year's DLSI, but I received an email of your wiki site, so I perused...I love the video nuggets you included for each day--they are great! I emailed a few of the video links to my professor at UWF who seems to enjoy these type of YouTube videos--I am hoping she will play a few of them in our next few classes so as to get some my fellow classmates to view technology in the classroom with a little bit more of an open mind. (I have been defending the use of technology to prepare our students for what lies ahead to the bitter end in my graduate class!!!) Have a great week of Digital Learning everyone!!.....do I get any blue tickets for this??--Ellie Fitzgerald

Springboard Questions - What stood out to you in Kevin's presentation? What would you like to try that Kevin mentioned? How you already undertaking what Kevin discussed? Do you have boundaries in your classroom? If so, what are they? How night you overcome them? How might you "think outside the dots"? How do you define collaboration (inside or outside the classroom)? How can we insure that all students in a group or collaboration are contributing to the group's learning?

I would have loved to have been a "mouse in the corner" during Kevin's presentation on collaboration. I see collaboration as one of THE most important skills that we need to be including in our 21st century classrooms. Collaboration is under-practiced, multi-faceted, and extremely necessary for our students' future successes. Like the teacher's response directly above this post, I want to collaborate with other classrooms in other places, but often don't know how to get started finding a collaboration partner. TeachersConnecting.com is an answer for this. Meant to be a "virtual handshake" between teachers, you can post a project or just search for others that classrooms are looking for participants in. Searching by comfort level, grade level, and more gives you flexibility in finding the collaboration project that works for you. Check it out at http://teachersconnecting.com Enjoy the rest of your week! Wish I could join you all!

What thoughts came to mind as you listened to Mark Benno's presentation? How do you see the tools of 21st century learning impacting how you teach and how your students learn? What would Challenge Based Learning look like in your classroom? What would be a Big Idea that could be the basis of Challenge Based Learning in your curriculum?

I think that Challenged Based Learning is valuable but I am not sure that the two tools, Facebook and Twitter, are the best way to achieve this. While I do think that there is a value in communicating with a larger audience, sometimes I worry that we have lost the personal touch. We are in some way isolating our students and not encouraging real dialogue. I think as we become a more global world we become a more impersonal world. For instance, we know more about tragedy overseas (or even locally) and it does not seem to affect us as it should...we just have the attitude "Well, that is interesting."

heard this on Fox News this morning and it made me wonder... A high school boy in CA who wanted to get into a good college was making F's. His solution; hack into the computer system and change his grades. I believe he hacked into college systems as well as his high school system. He then set up spyware to try to eliminate tracking his deviousness, but he eventually did get caught. He now faces 38 years in prison. The dilemma: did he break the law;?yes. Does he deserve punishment yes If he was smart enough to pull this off, why was he making "F's" I guess what I am asking is, is he totally to blame? Did the school system fail him somewhere? Thoughts?

We can get into the whole idea of blaming society, schools, and parents when kids do wrong. Unfortunately, we are raising a generation of students who don't feel like they need to take responsibility for any of their actions. If I hack into any computer system and get caught, I will be convicted of a crime. That is what he did.
Obviously, he is extremely bright to have been able to do all of this. I would hope that the government will do what they usually do to other hackers. The hackers are offered jobs working on deterring other hackers from accessing computers. Who can better figure out how to battle hackers than someone who has hacked a computer successfully.
I hope that he comes to the realization that there are consequences to his actions. And his parents won't be able to get him out of this mess. I would hope that this is a wake-up call for him, his school, his friends, and his family. And maybe it should be a wake-up for society. Children will face disappointments and consequences in real life. We need to help the students get used to that reality while the consequences are small, rather than when they become as big as 38 years in prison or an inability to get into the college of their dreams.

What a day! By 3:00 my brain hurt! But I did accomplish several things, not exactly everything that I had planned in the morning. I found some great rap songs to use with my students. (Thanks, Kari!) I found some youtube videos to use in multimedia presentations for my classes. I learned from other teachers some ideas for classroom management (and hopefully shared a few ideas as well!) I thought a lot about teaching styles and the need to make certain that my teaching reaches all of the students entrusted to me! (Sometimes God puts us in situations that allow us to learn unexpected things!) And mainly I realized that I have a lot of work still left to do before the fall. But I hope that my students will find that my classroom is an exciting and challenging place to learn. And that mainly they will learn how to think and decide what is right for them! I know that this inservice has done that for me! Thanks to everyone involved! You have all made this a truly great experience for me!

Hey DLSI folks,
I wish I could have been with you this week, but I know you have been in the best (and craziest) of hands! As you wrap up your smorgasbord of technology integration this week do not overlook that you have just been learning how and what to eat. Nutrition, like learning, is a life-long pursuit. Keep eating the stuff that you have learned to enjoy but always try new things. Remember when your Mom told you that taste buds change as you grow older? Kids change too and from that, so do the strategies and technologies that we need to employ to engage them in instruction.

Hey DLSI Folks! I can only echo Mark's comments. The additional of technology into your classroom may cause you an upset stomach or two as you digest a bad combination, but as you continue to tweak your recipes to get that perfect taste, it will only invigorate and re-energize your appetite for teaching in your classroom. Knowing Michelle and Colleen, they will continue to help you create a taste palette that will only encourage you to sample a wider variety of spices! Hope you have had a great week and Keep Cooking! I think my favorite part of Studywiz is the Gallery... although it clearly brings to mind a picture gallery (and some of you may remember me as the Visual Literacy Guy)... be sure that you don't limit yourself to using pictures with the Gallery Tool.
Galleries can be student projects like podcasts, performances, concept maps, or teacher provide documents like pdfs, three or four examples of steps to solve a math problem, scripts, slogans, etc. Then the gallery becomes a peer review of projects, analysis of different perspectives, discussions of correct and incorrect methods. Students can asked to comment on each item or a minimum of three of the items in the gallery comments sections. The students love this!
