Personal Growth Goal:
I am definitely looking for ideas for differentiated instruction for mathematics and science.

For Algebra I need ideas of how to help my learners grow in critical thinking. The kids give up so easily I want to change this.

For Earth Science I am interested in more technology to bring the learners into a learner centered classroom. I want the learners to engage in more conversation amongst themselves. I would like for my learners to induce more of this conversation and not just use yes and no answers. Participation is the key.

Student Achievement Goal: To increase the Bloom's levels of thinking. Learners in both Algebra and Earth Science want to stay at the Knowledge level. They have to walk up the ladder.

Pre-Columbian Society, Transatlantic Encounters and Colonial Beginnings 1492-1754

Unit I Objectives - (approx. 11 days including assessments) Analyze the cultural exchange between Native Americans, Africans, and Europeans that distinguished pre-Revolutionary American culture.

Lesson Objectives: (each will have a different number of days to complete)
1) SWBAT - Identify the characteristics of the Indian, African and European culture during the era of contact.
2) SWBAT - Explain the motives and stages of European oceanic and overland explorations from 1492 to 1700 amid international rivalries.
3) SWBAT – Analyze the relationship among the rise of individualism, the roots of representative government, and how political rights were defined in the British colonies.
4) SWBAT - Describe colonial economic life and labor systems in the Americas.

Lesson 1 Day 1 Activity – Archaeology “A World of Their Own: The Americas to 1500”

Prepatory Assignment – Reading Boyer 2-21 (Online Quiz Due after day 1 lesson)

Daily Objective:
1. Compare and explain the common elements of Native American cultures such as gender roles, family organization, religion, values, and environmental interaction and their striking diversity in languages, shelter, tools, food, and clothing.

Theme: Historians use a variety of methods, tools, and techniques to find out about the past.

Skills to be Acquired and Demonstrated:
1. Define the terms archaeology, geology, climatology, ecology, anthropology, and ethnology.
2. Describe the primary tools and techniques that people use in each of the above fields.
3. Apply the tools and techniques of the above fields to draw inferences about the lives and cultures of people who have no written records or oral language available.

Activities:
1. Video introduction on purpose of archaeology from UWF. (coming soon via Dr. Judy Bense)
2. Divide the class into six heterogenous groups and distribute a (physical or electronic) packet of photographs of topography, products, architecture, and other iconic representations of the culture of a region of the United States circa 1500. Each group will receive a different packet. (Wampanoag, Pequot, Lenape (later named Delaware Indians by Europeans) Powhatan, Muscoge (or Creek), Timucuan) Wampanoag ex.)
3. Introduce the tribes and their regional distribution to be investigated via Powerpoint. (ex. screenshot)
4. The students' first task is to classify the photographs by placing them into the following groups: structures, landscapes, clothing, tools and equipment, and miscellaneous.
6. The students’ will draw inferences from the artifacts by asking questions such as the following:

a. How people earn a living?
b. What people think about religion?
c. How people use leisure time?
d. How people dress?
e. How people might communicate?
f. What type of groups might be formed?
g. What use and level of technological development do they have?

7. Homework - each group will nominate a reporter to post to the online Discussion Thread their major inferences about the culture and their bases for drawing them. Each class member will enter into a dialogue about the similarities and differences within each culture. Individually, each student will complete a graphic organizer of the similarities and differences of each culture and bring it to class the next day.Discussion Thread Link
8. The wrap up goal is to develop a classification system for the inferences drawn by each group. The classification should distinguish those characteristics that differ from region to region and those characteristics that appear common across all regions.

Lesson 1 Day 2 Activity – Historical Archaeology and Pre-Colonial West African Culture

Daily Objective
1. Describe the cultural traits of the dominant African kingdoms circa 1500.

Activities:
1. Brief Powerpoint on West Africa in 1492 (ex. screenshot)
2. Video introduction on Historical Archaeology. (via Margo Stringfield UWF)
3. Instruct the students to read the historical descriptions of foreign contemporaries visiting the dominant African Kingdoms of Mali, Songhai, and Kongo.
4. Homework - students will examine the artifacts provided from each kingdom and infer some information of the culture of West Africa - chat room will be open for discussion.
5. Homework - In a graphic organizer students will compare the historical record with the archaeological record to try to identify common characteristics of the West African kingdoms circa 1500.

Judges: any classroom full of students

One thing I feel I need to add to my classroom cuisine is spice, especially in my history recipes. I want to find a way to liven all sections of my class, but I'm still searching for the right ingredients. My goal for days three and four, during my time for some true self study, is to start building recipes for my units that will grab the judges attention and keep them wanting more. I want them to thirst for my tasty music class!

A good little musical nugget from Iron Chef Needlemen: If the music is being critiqued, you can use it in a project! This could be helpful! /c

List of Secret Ingredients	How to use the Secret Ingredient
Studywiz	Make use of the discussion feature. This could be a great tool for students sharing tips and tricks with one another at the beginning of CA S1. Or listening assignments?? UPDATE: I spend some time playing with the discussion activity with last.fm - it looks like it'll work. I could incorporate a "piece of the week" based on the current unit and invite students to provide input based on what we're currently studying. Could also provide listening samples for important composers for students to listen to as homework assignments.
Podcasting	give students a topic in groups. They them create a podcast covering their area and share them with the group. Obstacle: I need audio resources or some way of sharing music that I use in class without breaking copyright laws! Create music critique podcasts. Have students select moments in a piece of music to comment on, using musically relevant terms. Could be spread out throughout the semester or quarter.
Wikis and Blogs	apply the same concept for the topic podcast to a wiki or blog. This way students could provide audio links to last.fm, maybe?
Del.icio.us	help students to create a list of resources that they can use anytime, anywhere as "hour zero" resources use this as a way to show students the way to create resource lists on the subject area (like in the connectivism video)
iLife (iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand, iDVD)	iPhoto: create a music and emotion slideshow GarageBand: simple compositional forms; use composing class work from last year to demonstrate some forms - still looking for valid ways to demonstrate music using this app! Could be used for creating podcasts (see above). iMovie: Newscast project? Using significant moments in history and create short stories; some students can act as editors and anchors that bring all the pieces together? (this needs work, but it's a start) iTunes: need to explore the vast iTunesU section of the store for resources. Q: Will students be able to download podcasts and iTunesU content?
iWork (Keynote, Pages)	Keynote - ?? maybe should stick to using it as a delivery tool and not as much for projects Pages - could also use MS Word Publication View; historical advertisements for concerts that include short bios and list of compositions that belong together (i.e., Mozart and Beethoven, or Bach and Vivaldi, etc) Composing class could create a concert program - learn about contrasting styles this way?
Quicktime and PhotoBooth	use with 9-10 to make voice recordings on different diction techniques; found sounds projects with composing class and with MA class. Upperclassmen could use iPods with recorders to achieve the same goals.
Video Conferencing (Skype, iChat)	finding musical people (musicians, composers, technicians, band members) to have a question and answer session with students. Possibilities: David Ott? Check out local and regional band of popularity; also find people who would be willing to do some live demos for the students too.
iPods and iPod recorders	use with upperclassmen to make voice recordings on different diction techniques; found sounds projects with composing class and with MA class. Logistics: need to come up with pros and cons to propose letting students take home the iPods and recorders. Check out at the beginning of the day, return before leaving?
Websites	Last.fm this could be a way to get past my issue with making music available for students timetoast composer time lines in first person important events within a style period looking for a way to embed into a SW activity - awaiting response from the Shupester. bubble.us diagramming instrument families; creating a place to compare and contrast specific instruments and Pandora gives students a chance to find music similar to what they like using this website wordle watch a concert and put some thoughts onto paper. My story so far…..

I came into this workshop with a simple idea; create a collaboration between my art class and an artist or art student while they demonstrate a concept or technique.

Sounds simple.

How do I capture the experience?

I loaded SKYPE and familiarized myself and my colleagues with it’s functions.
I reacquainted myself with iChat and recorded my first video chat with someone off campus.
I have learned that Skype links PC with Mac and iChat is for Mac to Mac.

Where do I find artist or art students?

Twitter …My followers and twitting folk I follow has increased substantially.
Plurk….Making new buddies.
Websites with art chats.

What are parameters of the video interaction?

What are the legal requirements for rights for privacy for the student?

A format for the students to write up or use in a script for a presentation.

Artist knows what will be expected for him/her to speak to.

I took advantage of our guest speakers and picked their brains. I even tweeted Matthew Needleman in California.

I have contacted several schools such as Savannah College of Art and Design and Full Sail University to find students interested. Universities love to promote their programs. What better way than to show their facilities in use.

I want to promote local artist so I contacted The Arts Council of Northwest Florida.

My department wants to share with local high schools to connect students with peers their age and in their community.

(1) Protocol for posting threads and contributing to an online discussion are as follows:

a. Postings should be evenly distributed during the discussion period (not concentrated all on one day or at the beginning and/or end of the period).
b. Postings should be a minimum of one short paragraph and a maximum of two paragraphs.
c. Avoid postings that are limited to 'I agree' or 'great idea', etc. If you agree (or disagree) with a posting then say why you agree by supporting your statement with concepts from the readings or by bringing in a related example or experience.
d. Address the questions as much as possible (don't let the discussion stray).
e. Try to use quotes from the text or articles that support your postings. Include page numbers when you do that.
f. Build on others responses to create threads of debate.
g. Use proper etiquette (proper language, typing, etc.).

(2) Rubric for evaluating online discussions:

Grade Points = 100-90 80 70-60 50-0

(3) Evaluation criteria for facilitating/moderating an online discussion:

1. The discussants will demonstrate an observable understanding of the topics / readings being discussed. The understanding will be at the critical thinking and synthesis level.
2. The discussants will demonstrate an ability to engage the audience in a discussion that is relevant to the topics / readings and related concepts. This can be done in a variety of ways including but not limited to:
- posing engaging questions;
- eliciting responses;
- engaging the learners in an activity or task.
3. The discussants will demonstrate the ability to effectively organize the discussion. This includes:
- keeping the discussion focused on the topic;
- providing structure (beginning arguments, closing arguments, wrap-up or synthesis);
- staying within the timeframe allotted for discussion.
4. The discussants will demonstrate the ability to respond to questions effectively.
5. The discussants will demonstrate the ability to relate the concepts discussed in the topic to personal and professional experience by using examples from everyday practices.
